Integrative Medicine

Integrative Medicine

Integrative Medicine refers to a holistic movement that incorporates, into the patient's treatment plan, the conventional approaches of western medicine as well as complimentary and alternative approaches to healthcare.  The inclusion of different practices and techniques helps create a healing environment, one that addresses the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of the healing process and so leads to a better understanding of illness and healing and wellness.  An integrative approach emphasizes the value of science and tradition, the importance of personal empowerment and responsibility, and the creation of a health plan that is tailored to meet each person's needs.

Integrative Medicine can include many different specialties and allied health fields including chiropractic and naturopathic medicine, energy medicine, and physical therapy.  Integrative Medicine also incorporates the wisdom of traditional health practices that date back thousands of years. The most codified of the traditional health practices are  Ayurvedic Medicine and Chinese Medicine.  Within the field of Ayurveda, Yoga is traditionally considered to be a form of medicine.  Within Chinese Medicine, the field of Qi Gong is considered a therapeutic form of medicine.

In both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, patients are given therapeutic prescriptions that are designed to complement their other treatments.  This approach helps create a partnership between a patient and their physician to treat the mind, body and spirit.  Our task here is to highlight new discoveries and ancient wisdom in a form that you can use to inform and complement your care.  With this information, you can empower yourself to begin a journey of healing.

Through Medicine Yoga, we seek to bring together diverse patient and health care practitioner groups in an effort to build a strong and wise integrative health community.  We hope you will join us on this journey.
