Kettlebells
A kettlebell or girya is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. It has been in use as a strength tool in Russia for over 300 years. The kettlebell is traditionally swung between the legs with one or two hands. In addition to building full body coordination and strength, kettlebell training is excellent at building strength in the gluteal and hamstring muscles. Because kettlebell training is so effective at building strength in these muscles, it is one of the foundations of the Medicine Yoga/Brandi’s World ACL Fitness program. If you are interested in learning how to use this excellent fitness tool check out our online kettlebell classes which will be coming in the next few weeks.
Kettlebell training is also excellent for whole body fitness. Because the whole body is used, this type of training builds cardiovascular endurance and facilitates weight loss. It is an excellent adjunct to yoga, dietary coaching and cardiovascular training as part of a total weight loss program.
Kettlebell training is a great activity that almost anyone can do. It is wise to start with light weights and build strength over time. In the last few years kettlebells have revolutionized the strength and conditioning world. They are excellent for young athletes looking to build strength and flexibility, but work equally effectively for elite and professional athletes looking to take their game to the next level.
