Medical Pranayama

Breathing is foundational to life and is a foundational component of yoga.  In Medical Pranayama, specific breathing techniques are introduced for you to use as you prepare for surgery as well as during the healing process.  Employing these breathing techniques before surgery can help you relax and deal with stress or anxiety.  Following surgery,  Medical Pranayama breathing techniques can help you feel more centered and calm.   These technique can also help you deal with post-surgical pain relief and other aspects of the healing process.  A proactive technique like Medical Pranayama  will give you confidence at a time when many things can seem out of your control.

To enhance post surgical healing, we have integrated the use of the incentive spirometer with Medical Pranayama. This combination helps you deal with a common side effect of anesthesia, a slight collapse of the base of the lungs.  By creating a gentle pause at the end of exhalation, this breathing technique can achieve the same results that are gained from mechanical ventilator techniques such as positive end expiratory pressure.
