Meditation

Medicine Yoga has developed a series of meditation and visualization recordings for patients to use as they prepare for surgery, while in the operating room, and as a general aid as they recover from surgery. These specific visualizations, available on a compact disc or via download from the web site, can be used on the day of surgery and the first two days after surgery. Since meditation is beneficial for anxiety and pain relief, we also offer a visualization program that can be used to support general health and wellbeing.

These visualization exercises are accompanied by music created by David Gibson and Dr. Matty Cook. This music is engineered with binaural beat technology, and may have the effect of bringing the brain into a meditative state.

During surgery, anesthesia medications are used to create a tranquil state in the brain. These brainwaves are commonly measured in the operating room. It is intriguing to note that the brainwave patterns induced by anesthesia are the same brainwave patterns that are seen when people are in meditative states.

Thus we created this music to induce a meditative state in patients and so provide a tool that helps patients deal with pain and anxiety. Because of the similar effect of meditation and the medications used for surgery, we also developed a meditation that can be listened to while in the operating room. Many patients bring their own music or recordings of affirmations to the operating room. When patients combine these different approaches, they can help create an optimal surgical experience.
